{"id":66141,"date":"2026-04-07T17:34:02","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T21:34:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/?post_type=news&#038;p=66141"},"modified":"2026-04-07T17:34:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T21:34:03","slug":"the-19th-amendment-was-a-bad-idea-the-far-rights-wish-list-for-extreme-voter-suppression","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/analysis\/the-19th-amendment-was-a-bad-idea-the-far-rights-wish-list-for-extreme-voter-suppression\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The 19th Amendment was a bad idea\u2019: The far-right\u2019s wish list for extreme voter suppression"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>President Donald Trump and the GOP are attacking voting rights through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/news-alerts\/trump-signs-sweeping-order-attacking-mail-in-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive orders<\/a> to roll back mail-in voting and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/opinion\/the-save-america-act-a-modern-day-poll-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAVE America Act<\/a>, which would impose strict ID requirements.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But to some far-right Christian influencers, that\u2019s small potatoes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re pushing for even harsher voting restrictions. Among them: revoking women\u2019s right to vote, instituting \u201cfamily voting,\u201d and only allowing property owners the right to vote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These ideas haven\u2019t made it into legislation \u2014 yet. But they\u2019re growing in popularity among far-right Christian nationalists, many of whom are motivated by a belief that women should have no role at all in public affairs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kai Schwemmer \u2014 an influential conservative influencer who was recently appointed as political director for the College Republicans of America \u2014 said in an online debate last year that women shouldn\u2019t be able to vote, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/mar\/30\/kai-schwemmer-college-republicans-livestream\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to The Guardian.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe they currently have the right to vote,\u201d Schwemmer said. \u201cBut I\u2019m in favor of probably like a family voting thing. I think that\u2019d probably be a better way to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"sign-up\n\t\">\n\t<div class=\"sign-up__inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"sign-up__header\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"sign-up__eyebrow text--h6\">\n\t\t\t\t\tSIGN UP TODAY\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"sign-up__title text--h1\">\n\t\t\t\t\tGet updates straight to your inbox \u2014 for free\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"sign-up__desc\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Join 350,000 readers who rely on our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest in voting, elections and democracy.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"sign-up__form\">\n\t\t\t<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/js.hsforms.net\/forms\/embed\/v2.js\"><\/script><script>hbspt.forms.create({ region: \"na1\", portalId: \"48216804\", formId: \"fab07014-69b1-4490-9551-b7340cb6c2ba\" });<\/script>\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Family voting is a concept championed by Christian nationalists that only allows the patriarchal head of a family\u2019s household to cast a vote on behalf of his wife and children.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schwemmer \u2014 whose supporters describe him as a \u201cMormon Nick Fuentes,\u201d the far-right streamer known for his misogyny and antisemitism \u2014 is hardly the first influential figure on the right to call for family voting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In August 2025, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/08\/09\/nx-s1-5497226\/women-pastor-pete-hegseth-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reposted<\/a> a CNN interview with Doug Wilson, Hegseth\u2019s Christian nationalist pastor, who doesn\u2019t believe women should vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Women are the kind of people that people come out of,\u201d Wilson told CNN. &#8220;The wife and mother, who is the chief executive of the home, is entrusted with three or four or five eternal souls.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just before the 2022 midterm elections, as polling showed Democrats were performing well with women voters, another conservative pastor and YouTuber, Joel Webbon, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rightresponsem\/status\/1588533014635909120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted<\/a> that \u201cthe 19th Amendment was a bad idea.\u201d He\u2019s since used his large platform for misogynistic rants where he regularly advocates for revoking women\u2019s rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA woman as a mother is a precious gift, but a woman as a civil magistrate is the death of the nation,\u201d Webbon recently <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/search?q=from%3AJoelWebbon%2019th%20amendment&amp;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted<\/a> on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, Dale Partridge, another Christian nationalist pastor, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dalepartridge\/status\/1986083514580943272?s=42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted<\/a> on social media that &#8220;in a Christian marriage, a wife should vote according to her husband\u2019s direction.\u201d In January 2025, Partridge <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dalepartridge\/status\/1986083514580943272?s=42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Congress should repeal the 19th Amendment because he thinks women are too empathetic.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we should repeal the 19th Amendment because I don\u2019t love women,\u201d Partridge said. \u201cI think we should repeal the 19th Amendment because I love America and American women and want to protect our nation from their suicidal empathy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the powerful venture capitalist and conservative activist Peter Thiel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/peter-thiel-women-democracy_n_5747079be4b03ede4413f6f5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">once wrote<\/a> that he thought the women\u2019s suffrage movement was bad for democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI used to teach this as, \u2018This is this fringe thing that\u2019s out there,\u2019\u201d Beth Allison Barr, a history professor at Baylor University, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/02\/us\/household-vote-women.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> the New York Times. \u201cNow I teach it as, \u2018This is no longer fringe\u2019\u2026It\u2019s being made to sound more palatable and reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not allowing women to vote isn\u2019t Schwemmer\u2019s only controversial view. In the same debate where Schwemmer expressed support for family voting, he added that he\u2019s \u201cvery much an anti-universal suffrage guy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s a good defense for allowing people to vote who don\u2019t take the time to return shopping carts,\u201d Schwemmer said. \u201cI think that\u2019s a huge issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schwemmer is referencing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/14\/insider\/shopping-carts-journalism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shopping cart theory<\/a> \u2014 a litmus test that distills a person\u2019s entire morality into whether or not they return a shopping cart to its designated cart corral when they\u2019re done shopping. As outrageous as it sounds, far-right figures are constantly scheming up new ways to shut out voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAllowing those people the same leverage in your electoral system as a homeowner,\u201d Schwemmer added. \u201cThat\u2019s crazy to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allowing only homeowners the right to vote is a form of voter suppression that dates back to the 1800s \u2014 but conservative activists besides Schwemmer have floated reviving the practice over the years, which would stand to disenfranchise millions of voters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the most prominent may be Steve Bannon, the popular podcaster and former senior advisor to Trump. A former colleague of Bannon told the New York Times in 2016 that he \u201coccasionally talked about the genetic superiority of some people and once mused about the desirability of limiting the vote to property owners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in 2012, Ted Yoho, a former GOP congressman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ms.now\/msnbc\/tea-party-congressman-ted-yoho-voting-suggestion-msna332611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> at a campaign event that only property owners should vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had some radical ideas about voting, and it\u2019s probably not a good time to tell them,\u201d Yoho said. \u201cBut you used to have to be a property owner to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, allowing only property owners to vote hasn\u2019t come up much among GOP lawmakers, but as conservatives fervently push to restrict voting with the SAVE America Act, more right-wingers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AskTrumpSupporters\/comments\/1380o08\/should_only_land_owners_be_allowed_to_vote_whywhy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviving the proposal<\/a>. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanthinker.com\/blog\/2025\/11\/should_only_property_owners_vote.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">op-ed<\/a> in the online conservative magazine The American Thinker last year advocated only allowing property owners to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must require that voters meet certain reasonable standards of competence,\u201d the writer, Robert Arvay, argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the SAVE America Act still being pushed by the GOP, conservative influencers are using the opportunity to push for other extreme anti-voting measures. Right-wing podcaster Steven Crowder <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/scrowder\/status\/2031812996767351039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently posted<\/a> on social media that, in addition to family voting, only people in \u201cmandatory selective service\u201d should be allowed to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crowder also said that only people who \u201chave at least three years of gainful employment and are currently paying taxes,\u201d should vote, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose who only stand to gain will always vote for more gain,\u201d Crowder wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These ideas haven\u2019t made it into legislation \u2014 yet.
