(Photo by Leah Millis-Pool\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats and civil-rights advocates are speaking out after the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s conservative majority <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/news-alerts\/supreme-court-greenlights-alabamas-racial-gerrymander-signaling-free-rein-for-states-to-discriminate\/\" target=\"_blank\">delivered<\/a> a final blow to the Voting Rights Act (VRA) Tuesday when it allowed Alabama to use a congressional map previously found to have intentionally discriminated against Black voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The historic ruling effectively gives states free rein to discriminate and leaves virtually no federal protections for non-white voters, even in extreme cases. Shomari Figures, the Alabama Democrat whose district the ruling directly targets, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/repscfigures\/status\/2062020484296843569?s=20\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/repscfigures\/status\/2062020484296843569?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cThis is a dangerous ruling that sets the State and this nation back decades.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow we know: Today is the day the SCOTUS took the remaining life out of the VRA,\u201d Kareem Crayton, vice president of the Brennan Center for Justice\u2019s Washington, D.C., office, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KareemCrayton\/status\/2061986656601670124?s=20\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KareemCrayton\/status\/2061986656601670124?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cDespite the clearest evidence of intentional race discrimination by [Alabama] \u2014 that two conservative justices credited, the Court now rewards a state that openly defied a court order. Cold work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristen Clarke, general counsel of the NAACP, blasted the Supreme Court majority for stripping Black voters of political power \u201cat a speed that would put Jim Crow jurists to shame.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deuel Ross, director of litigation at the Legal Defense Fund, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\/press-release\/supreme-court-reinstates-racially-discriminatory-map-for-alabamas-2026-congressional-elections\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\/press-release\/supreme-court-reinstates-racially-discriminatory-map-for-alabamas-2026-congressional-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">described<\/a> the nation\u2019s new legal reality in clear, bleak terms: \u201cThe Supreme Court\u2019s decision gives cover to Alabama and others to deliberately and openly discriminate against Black voters without fear of any consequence. The Court\u2019s shameless decision to reinstate a racially discriminatory map defies any thoughtful or consistent application of the law.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTonight, Alabama has officially rejoined the old Confederacy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dougjones\/status\/2062009639722487847?s=46&amp;t=QlDwJZ5aTWqW-30Sohtckw\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dougjones\/status\/2062009639722487847?s=46&amp;t=QlDwJZ5aTWqW-30Sohtckw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Doug Jones, a former Alabama Democratic senator who is currently running for governor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a video posted on social media, he said the Supreme Court had acted in \u201can incredibly malignant way\u201d and delivered an \u201cabsolutely outrageous\u201d ruling without any legal reasoning aside from their own partisan preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.), who represents Alabama\u2019s remaining Black-majority district, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepTerriSewell\/status\/2062006343091802611?s=20\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepTerriSewell\/status\/2062006343091802611?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">condemned<\/a> the court for \u201callowing Alabama Republicans to change the rules in the eleventh hour and use a racist congressional map that federal courts have found \u2014 on two separate occasions \u2014 intentionally discriminates against Black Alabama voters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) blasted Alabama Republicans for rushing to enact a racist map in an election where absentee voting had already begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs soon as Section 2 of the VRA was eviscerated, they\u2019ve leapt into action to try to remove Black elected officials, not by defeating them at the polls, but by manipulating maps to dilute minority power,\u201d Ossoff <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Acyn\/status\/2061987021321900222?s=20\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Acyn\/status\/2061987021321900222?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> during a TV appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his part, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) made his own plea to voters: \u201cWAKE UP, AMERICA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Supreme Court majority just admitted it\u2019s a PARTISAN operator willing to TORCH the rule of law to advance its ideological agenda,\u201d Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovPressOffice\/status\/2062008665729872313\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovPressOffice\/status\/2062008665729872313\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> through a statement on his press office account. \u201cIn an unprecedented move with a brief UNSIGNED order, it: 1) IGNORED the central basis of the lower court\u2019s decision, 2) DISREGARDED its own precedent (that it had assured just weeks ago remained good law), and 3) REWARDED Alabama&#8217;s defiance of a federal court order.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ruling appears to be further igniting calls from Democrats to seriously consider major reforms to the Supreme Court.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe greatest threat to American democracy may no longer be found in Congress or the White House.
